This stunning, large Chinese famille verte vase in Rouleau form depicts a figurative landscape. A group of soldiers and officials are gathering around the pavilion where their general is seated. Trees and rocks fill up the painting, which is continued over the neck, providing a depth to the overall landscape.

Atop of the shoulder is a brocade decoration with various objects placed between, involving the scholar's theme.

Famille Verte

The term Famille Verte, which originated in the 19th century, designates a specific variety of Chinese export porcelains from the late 17th and the early 18th centuries. In those days, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), porcelain factories in China made an effort to develop new forms and ornamentation techniques that would meet the demands of customers both in and outside of China. One of these new varieties was especially successful: Famille Verte, which is characterized by ornaments in enamels over the glaze with multiple green tones dominating. The ornaments were generally finely hand-painted in great detail.

Condition

This Famille Verte porcelain vase is in very good condition with fine signs of age and wear. Minimal color abrasion is visible.
