Chuck Close (American, b. 1940)
Chuck Close is renowned for his highly inventive techniques of painting the human face, and is best known from his large-scale Photorealist portraits. After studying at the University of Washington and Yale University, Close moved to New York, where he was one of the founders of Photorealistic painting, first working in black and white before shifting to color. The subjects of his portraits are typically family and friends, and include artists such as Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Serra, and Alex Katz. His practice extends beyond painting to encompass printmaking, photography, and, most recently, tapestries based on Polaroids. His work is widely esteemed, and has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art and PS1 in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London, among many other institutions. Close lives and works in New York City and Long Island.
