Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997)
One of the best known representatives of Pop Art alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein is best known for his comic book-like images. Taking inspiration from everyday life, the mass media, advertising and consumerism, his illustrations are often outlined in black and designed in primary colors. A solo show of such works at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962 garnered him critical acclaim. Lichtenstein exhibited at the documenta in Kassel in 1968 and 1977. In addition to paintings he created screen and woodblock prints, collages, ceramics and sculptures. A very prolific, celebrated, and sought-after artist, Lichtenstein also created many public sculptures during his lifetime, and his work has been the subject of numerous international retrospectives.
