Description
John Fery (American/Austrian, 1859-1934).
Untitled (possibly a Glacier National Park waterfall)
Signed lower right: "J. Fery" Oil on panel
Image 15 3/4" x 9 7/8"
Framed 18 3/4" x 12 7/8"
Provenance: Private Collection, MI
Bio: An avid outdoorsman as well as a talented landscape artist, John Fery studied art at the academies of Vienna, Munich, and Dusseldorf. Drawn to America, especially to the “German Athens” (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), Fery found easy work as a giant panorama artist for German immigrant owned companies. From 1893 to 1894, he led European nobility and aristocrats on hunting expeditions to the American Northwest, made possible by the completion of the Great Northern Railway. Fery’s panoramic paintings of the beauty of the landscape helped encourage the creation of Glacier National Park. He was later commissioned by the Northern Pacific railroad to commemorate Yellowstone National Park. Fery’s paintings of the mountains, lakes and wildlife of Glacier National Park, some approaching billboard size, are his most famous and characteristic works.
