Description
Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO, N.Y.", circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of standing deer with turned head, large rack, and spotted body, flanked by striped shrubs. Stylized ground below. This striking figural decoration reveals the influence of Rochester, NY master potter, John Burger, in its stance, heavy spotting, and antler structure. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of the finest examples of Braun stoneware we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A thin 5 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. An 8 1/2" Y-shaped line on right side of churn. A 2 1/4" line from rim on right side of churn. A 3 3/8" hairline from rim on front. Two faint lines on underside. Chips to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. H 16".
