Lead-and-Manganese-Glazed Redware Figure of a Dog with Basket, Pennsylvania origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a seated dog with poodle cut and impressed collar, holding a basket of apples in its mouth. Figure includes impressed eyes and heavily-incised detail to fur and paws. Excellent detail to basket includes incised border and impressed details to apples and wall of basket. Impressed circular and floral decoration to base. Surface decorated with daubs of manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Anatomically-correct underside. Figure rattles when shaken. A finely-modeled example, somewhat larger than most Pennsylvania redware dogs known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in the 1960s. Jim Evans restoration to the tail and a 1 3/4" x 2" section of base at rear. Some typical light surface wear, including wear to tip of nose. L 6" ; H 5".
