Jean Prouvé (1901-1984)
After apprenticing as a metalsmith at Émile Robert and Adalbert Szabo, Jean Prouvé, a native of Paris, opened his own workshop in 1924 in Nancy, where he created pieces of furniture combining functionality with aesthetics and offering them at reasonable prices. At that time, Prouvé met Le Corbusier and created architectonic designs inspired by the great master. Prouvé succeeded in receiving his first patent for steel sheet doors in 1929. Another important achievement in his life was the jury chairmanship of the construction of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His total body of work comprises smaller to larger pieces of furniture and industrial products, up to facades, prefabricated houses and construction systems. Until today, Prouvé is regarded as guiding in architecture and he established innovative solutions for pieces of furniture.
