Eileen Gray designed the ‘Transat’ (an abbreviation of ‘transatlantic’) between 1925 and 1926 for her Villa E 1027 in Roquebrune, on the Côte d‘Azur. With an adjustable headrest and sling seat, the chair was clearly inspired by the simple functionalism of a deckchair. The chair fited her home very well, which was to imitate a houseboat. The design shows Gray’s transition to modernism, which took place since the mid-1920s. The present iconic design is the perfect expression of her individualist approach, combining selected materials, artistic form and human condition.
