Description
A mid-Victorian silver vinaigrette, the rectangular form with scroll edge and further engraved throughout with foliate scrolls, the hinged lid with central vacant cartouche and opening to a foliate pierced grille and sponge. Hallmarked Hilliard & Thomason, Birmingham 1860. Measuring 3.8 cm by 2.8 cm, gross weight 22.6 grams.
The vinaigrette appears in fairly good overall condition displaying some general wear, surface scratches, marks and tarnishing. Hinges appear in working order. Interior was likely once gilded but this is now faded. The reverse of the grill is also quite discoloured and tarnished. Hallmarks appear a little rubbed but are still clearly legible. Reverse of grille struck with the monarch head.
