Description
Papua New Guinea, Sepik River, Aibom Village, ca. early 20th century CE. A dramatic terracotta head effigy of a composite animal / human countenance, the face of a triangular form with horn-like extensions protruding behind, large coffee bean shaped eyes, a protruding nose, and a less protruding nevertheless still protruding mouth with with a slit opening. The entire surface is meticulously incised with stylized striations and repeated patterns. Women of the Aibom Village have traditionally created intricately modeled and decorated pots called Damarau that are quite rare to find and therefore prized by collectors. This head reminds me of the visages found on these vessels. Size: 6.75" L x 8.25" W x 6.125" H (17.1 cm x 21 cm x 15.6 cm)
