Item Details

Description

Japan, Edo period, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. A wonderful and rare tobacco pouch carved in two parts (pouch and lid) from deep brown hardwood with gorgeous decorative appliques in pottery, shell, bone and boxwood. The boxwood applique is especially delightful as it is in the form of a devil with long horns and lower fangs. This devil creature is actually an Oni, a kind of Yokai from Japanese folklore. Depictions of oni vary widely but usually portray them as hideous, gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads.[2] They are humanoid for the most part, but occasionally, they are shown with unnatural features such as odd numbers of eyes or extra fingers and toes. Stunning Japanese art! Size: 4.875" L x 2.25" W x 3.25" H (12.4 cm x 5.7 cm x 8.3 cm)
