Description
A pair of Roman glass juglet amulets. The first is in opaque black glass and resembles an olpe with single loop handle. 25 x 19mm. The second in black glass with red zigzag trailing around the body, part of one of the handles remain along with beautiful iridescence. 28 x 20mm. For the first Cf. Petrie Amulets 70q (plate 47); Spaer 353; Monsieur D 442. For the second Cf. Christie's Kofler-Truniger Collection (3/5/85) 204. Ex East Coast private collection. In the Ernesto Wolf Collection, Marianne Stern argues the distribution of this type of juglet, from the Holy Land to Western Europe, indicates they were produced in Palestine as early Christian amulets and taken as relics or souvenirs from Holy areas.
