Description
Achilles and the centaur Chiron. A Roman North African Red ware fragment dating from AD 350 - 420 from a large lanx depicting a young Achilles who is with his wise trainer the centaur Chiron. Achilles is also written of in mythology as being dipped in the River Styx by Thetis whereby he was rendered invincible except for the section of his heel where he was held by. Thus the origin of the famous 'Achilles' heel'. 3 1/2 in x 1 7/8 in (8.9 x 4.8 cm). Cf. Garbsch and Overbeck, (1989) pp. 164-174; Light from the age of Augustine p. 76 no. 77.
