California Gold Rush Transferware Miniature Cup Plate
c. 1850-60s California Gold Rush Period, Violet Transferware Miniature Cup Plate, Titled "Away to California" by John Thomson & Sons, Choice Extremely Fine.
This original historical Cup Plate is commemorating the California Gold Rush. Technically it is a child's miniature plate, measuring 4" in diameter, it is impeccably crafted with fine Transfer and press molded decorative “daisy” design border. Titled "Away to California" it depicts a Sailing Ship in a harbor, getting ready to set sail. Panning for gold in California created the “Gold Rush” from about 1849 until the early 1860s when the source of gold along the river beds became depleted. The image is part of the "California" series made by John Thomson & Sons, a transferware pottery maker (in the tradition of the Staffordshire potteries) in Glasgow Scotland, from 1816-1884. This "Away to California" pattern quite rare. Other images in the California series include, “California Diggings” and “Indian Chiefs,” depicting Indians trading gold for beaver pelts. This example is in great condition, with only a small heating line as made, on the right side just below center. Minor toning and having a very clear deep vivid violet transfer printed image. A wonderful addition to any collection of American historical California Gold Rush collectibles.
