Spicer, Clayton (American, 1889-1958) Oil Painting. “A Quiet Cove.” Signed lower right Clayton Spicer 1932. In good condition. Oil on wood. Measures 20” x 16”. The frame measures 24 ” x 20 ”.

Clayton Spicer was a “masterful painter” who studied at the Art Students League of New York with Frank DuMond and Robert Henri, founder of the Ashcan School of American art. During World War I he served as an Infantry Captain. His wife, Lilias Spicer, was a lamp buyer at W.J. Sloans Department Store in Manhattan who pioneered the use of Chinese vases as lamp bases. His daughter, Jessie Spicer Zerner, became a talented artist who wrote children’s books and illustrated greeting cards. Clayton Spicer co-authored with Nathaniel Pousette-Dart the book Paintings, Watercolors and Lithographs. He founded the Clayton Spicer Press in New York and eventually settled in Laporte, Pennsylvania, where he passed away November 18, 1958.
