From Askart: Isabella Banks Markell - painter, sculptor, and etcher - was born in Superior, WI on December 17, 1891 but worked a good part of her adult life in New York City where she passed away July 17, 1980. She studied in France at the Fontainebleau in 1930 and at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts. In the United States she studied at the Maryland Institute in 1933 and 1934; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1935; the O'Hara School in 1938; the Brackman School in 1942, 1943, and 1946. Markell studied under such notables as Eliot O'Hara (1890-1969); Robert Brackman, NA (1898-1980); and Jerry Farnsworth, A.N.A. (1995-1983). Her address in 1982 is listed as New York City, and in 1984, as 10 Gracie Square, NYC. Markell was a member of the National Association of Women Artists in New York City and served as president in 1946. She also held memberships with the Society of American Graphic Artists in New York City; the Pen and Brush Club, established in 1894 in New York City for women artists, writers, and craftswomen; the Miami Art Association; the Society of American Etchers; the Philadelphia Print Club; the Washington Printmakers; and the Southern States Art League. She exhibited her work at the Newark Museum in NJ; the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; the Massachusetts Mechanics Association in Boston, MA; the Library of Congress in Washington, DC; the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA; the Baltimore Museum of Art in MD; the Birmingham Museum of Art in AL; the Philadelphia Print Club; the Irvington Art Museum; the Boston Printmakers; the Northwest Printmakers; the Allied Artists of America in New York City; the New York Historical Society; the American Watercolor Society in New York City; the Society of American Graphic Artists in New York City, formerly known as the Society of American Etchers; the Museum of the City of New York; the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, now the San Francisco Museum of Art; the Du Motte gallery in 1943; the Argent Gallery in 1945; the Laguna Beach Art Association in CA; the New Haven Paint and Clay Club in CT; the Toronto Art Gallery; and the New Jersey Painters and Sculptors Society. Markell's numerous awards include prizes at the Southern States Art League in 1945; the Boston Printmakers; the Pen and Brush Club in 1953, 1955, and 1964; the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts in 1958; the National Association of Women Artists in 1956, 1958 to 1960, and 1964; the American Artists Professional League, three gold medals in 1960, and a prize in 1964. Markell's work is represented in the collections of the New York Public Library; the New York Historical Society; the Museum of the City of New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Philadelphia Free Library; the Philadelphia Printmakers Club; the New York Hospital; the Providence Museum of Art; and the Northwest Printmakers.
