Richard J. Boyle is the former director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the Curator of Painting and Sculpture, Cincinnati Art Museum. He is a Benjamin Franklin Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Manufacturers, London. Boyle’s books include Sunlight and Shadow: The Life and Art of Willard L. Metcalf (1987), American Impressionism (New York Graphic Society, 1974), and John Twachtman (Watson-Guptill, 1979), which received the Award of Literary Merit from the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. It’s interesting to note that Boyle is a Metcalf scholar and historian, and this auction includes a Metcalf painting, Lot 266, which is featured in Boyle’s book Sunlight and Shadow.
