Description
Russian, 19th century. Faberge (Russian, founded 1842) style silver and cloisonné enamel egg box. Box bears ovoidal egg form and is hinged with garnet cabochon locking mechanism, with elaborate cloisonné decoration depicting a winged dragon (likely a reference to St. George and the Dragon), birds, flowers and scrolled foliates with a gold-washed interior. Stamped on interior with 84 zolotnik mark indicating silver; with maker’s mark FP in cyrillic likely for Feodor Ivanovich Rückert, and city mark depicting warrior on horseback, likely St. George, indicating Moscow. Stamped on lip with maker’s mark FP in Cyrillic likely for Feodor Ivanovich Rückert; with Faberge mark under double-headed eagle in cyrilic. Overall approximately 4” x 2.75”. Note: Ruckert was of German extract, born in Moscow, and worked as a silversmith, making wares he sold himself as well as producing fine cloisonne enamel and silver for Faberge's Moscow branch.
