Description
James Brade Sword (American (Pennsylvania), 1839-1915). "On The River", watercolor on wove paper laid down on artist boart, signed lower left "J. B. Sword". Naturalistic landscape painting depicting a wide river bearing many row boats docked to the right bank, one holding figures, and two similar boats afloat in the water to background, the waterway flanked at left by a hillside covered in tall green trees, to right by a grassy meadow, and to background with a distant mountain. Framed approximately 22.5" x 28.75". Unframed approximately 14.5" x 21".
Condition
Examined out of the frame. Sheet laid down to artist board. Graphite lining apparent to borders of work, likely by artist's hand. Sheet margins exhibiting some toning. No apparent mat burn or foxing. Verso of artist's board with masking tape remnants to top and sides. Board overall attached to back mat board with three pieces of hinging tape applied to verso of painting board.
