Nathaniel Jocelyn (American (Georgia, Connecticut), 1796-1881), "Portrait of Leonard Woods Age 49"-1823, oil on canvas, apparently unsigned, however, accompanied with photograph of verso of work reading "Leonard Woods Age 49 N. Jocelyn 1823". Formal bust length portrait of a gentleman depicting Leonard Woods (American, 1774-1854) sitting in red chair with a solid dark background, Woods with strong nose, and pert lips, wearing a high white collared shirt under black pastor's robe. With period frame. Copy of photograph with inscription on sitter and artist available upon request. Unframed approximately 30.5"x 25". Framed approximately 37.125" x 32". Note: Nathaniel Jocelyn is an important American portrait artist having famously captured the likenesses of both Joseph Cinqué who led the revolt on The Amistad in 1839 (New Haven Museum) and noted abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison (National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian). The sitter, Leonard Woods, was an American theologian and pastor.
