Description
SAM HOUSTON (1793 - 1863) A TOOLED LEATHER WALLET, the accordion pleated interior with divisions for each letter of the alphabet and ending with "SUNDRIES," with fold over flap inscribed "SAM HOUSTON." Height: 5" Width: 9 1/2" NOTE: From the estate of the late Dr. John Wheeler, past president of Historic Anderson, Inc. Purchased at the auction of Sam Houston memorabilia in the 1970's at the Institute of Texan Cultures after the Hemisfair at San Antonio. The leather pouch was reportedly carried by the general while he was a Senator from Texas. It was used by the Grimes County Bicentennial Committee for the July 4th, 1976, mail run from Fanthorp Inn in Anderson to Independence Hall at Washington on the Brazos. Comes with a copy of Navasota Examiner, Thursday, June 24, 1976.
