Description
A JAPANESE LACQUER SUZURIBAKO WRITING BOX, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912), square in form, the lid variously decorated in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and nashiji on a black lacquer ground with a detailed scene of a warrior on horseback departing from a waterfront temple, seen off by a number of seated and standing attendants surrounded by boulders and Japanese maple trees, opening to reveal a red lacquer interior. Height: 1 1/2" Width: 7 1/2" Depth: 7 1/2"
Condition
Suzuribako writing box in good stable condition, with no major apparent cracks, chips, repairs, or loss of lacquerwork. The red lacquered interior with an intricate network of age cracks as well as remnants of ink smudges that do not detract from the beauty of the box.
