Custine was an aristocrat with a knack for writing about his travels, but his work on Russia is best known. Later dubbed by some historians as "the de Tocqueville of Russia," Custine travelled to Russia in 1839 seeking to find a compelling argument against representative democracy, but he found quite the opposite.
