Description
Syria or Egypt, Middle Bronze Age II - Middle Kingdom -, ca. 2000 to 1800 BCE, Dynasties 11 through 13. This is a bronze crescent-shaped axe with a bulbous detail and three places for attachment to a handle; it was cast using the lost wax technique. The Middle Bronze Age was a time throughout the Near East and Egypt that saw increased fortifications and the rise of palace-towns that controlled nearby villages and vied for power. An axe like this may have been used in warfare, but it would have been ultimately deposited as part of a warrior burial. Elite males of all ages were buried, often in caves with all of their extended family, with axes like this one at their heads. Custom stand. Size: 12.4" L x 2.25" W (31.5 cm x 5.7 cm).
