Important French edition, updated and renewed based on the final edition. In Avis du traducteur, Barbier recalled that in France had appeared several versions of the Origin of Species, but no complete, because the author, in each new English edition, had made major changes to his work: "La Nouvelle traduction que nous soumettons aujourd'hui au public a été faite sur la sixième édition anglaise. C'est l'édition définitive, nous écrit M. Darwin".

First French translation, published a very early stage in the same year of the original English edition, the only part of the vast work on the origins of the species, which was published the author living. "This represent the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two intended chapters... A large part of it contains detailed facts about artificial selection and discussion of them, but it also contains, in Chapter XXVII, his provisional hypothesis of pangenesis..."
