Description
c. 300-600, the thin hammered sheet probably used as a headdress ornament, in the form of a ferocious feline deity's head, densely marked in repousse with whiskered open mouth baring teeth, the ruff indicated by a running chevron pattern, and the face encircled by projecting serpents, two of double-headed form; pierced in four pairs for attachment. Width 6.25". Provenance: Andre Emmerich Gallery, Sotheby's 11/20/89 auction, lot # 30, retains original tag. From the living estate of Professor Williamson, Lehigh University.
