Item Details
Description
Description: A unique Austrian Model 1869 cavalry sword. Such swords were the first Austrian style to be used for all cavalry regiments, both heavy and light. All were fitted with a rolled edge semi bowl guard pierced with stylized foliage. Integral pommel and saddled back strap. The grip being wrapped in black colored ray skin. This example has been reutilized after having been either broken in battle or removed from Cavalry service and then arsenal reworked into a much smaller 22" long broad blade. Each of these swords were made with a broad fuller to the right side if the blade and having a flat reverse.Although not maker marked this example uses a blade made in neighboring Germany in the world famous sword and knife making city of Solingen. The blade ricasso is marked "Solingen Stahl", or "Solingen Steel".Being that this sword and scabbard were arsenal reworked we can assume, given it's short length, that this sword was re-utilized as an Infantryman's short sword.

History: Austrian edged weapons were standardized in the period from 1861 to the end of the Hapsburg monarchy. These were the M1861, M1869 and M1904 cavalry officer's and trooper's sabers.
