Description: Original Imperial German World War I black wound badge. This example being made of hollow, die cast brass. All W.W. I wound badges display the German helmet sitting upon crossed swords. Surmounted by an M1915 steel helmet, the entire badge being circumvented by a laurel leaf wreath.World War I Imperial German wound badges for the Imperial Navy were of a totally different design, yet made the same. The Naval wound badge was an Anchor, as the central motif, sitting upon crossed swords, with a heavy linked style chain encircling the badge. These were also issued in black, silver, or gold.

History: The German wound badge was first introduced in World War I and was designed by Kaiser Wilhelm II. They came in three grades: III class in black, II class in silver, and I class in gold. Each representing the number of times one was wounded or maimed.
