Description
Description: Sheraton style mahogany dining table and eight walnut French bergeres, 20th century. The table has a fine grained top, with double pedestals, carved in a pineapple motif. The tripod legs are nicely carved with leaves and reeds, ending with feet capped with brass lion's paws, and castors. The chairs are finely turned and are upholstered in a blue and peach floral on a green background and a peach jacquard on the backs. There are six side chairs (without arms) and two arm chairs.
History: Sheraton is a late 18th century neoclassical English furniture style, in vogue ca 1785-1820, that was coined by 19th century collectors and dealers to credit furniture designer Thomas Sheraton, born in Stockton-on-Tees, England in 1751 and whose books, "The Cabinet Dictionary" (1803) of engraved designs and the "Cabinet Maker's & Upholsterer's Drawing Book" (1791) of furniture patterns exemplify this style. In many respects Sheraton style corresponds with the contemporary Directoire style of France.A bergère chair (meaning “shepardessâ€) is a French armchair with exposed wooden framing and upholstered back and seat. Bergère chairs became popular in 17th century France amongst nobility, and were often made out of walnut or beechwood, gilded and upholstered in jacquard silk.
