Description
Description: Pair of William and Mary style console game tables, c.1810-30. Beautiful crotch and flame mahogany veneer, with oak as the secondary wood. Single drawer with brass teadrop pull and floral backplate. Turned and trumpet legs, with flat stretchers that follow the scallop shape of the aprons. The card surface is covered in a wool petit-point, designed with flowers and birds, and four chip wells sunk into the top.
History: The William and Mary style of decorative arts is so named during the reign (1689–1702) of William III and Mary II of England. When William came to the English throne from the house of Orange, he encouraged many Dutch artisans to follow him, giving this furniture style a conservative look with a Dutch influence in curving silhouettes, cabriole and trumpet legs, spoon backs and splats, and Spanish and pied-de-bich feet. Richly figured veneers and marquetry are used extensively. Other definitive characteristics include turned, baluster, or trumpet legs and flat stretchers that repeat the shapes of aprons.
