Description: Mahogany occasional table, in the French style, c.1880-1900. Beautifully grained mahogany table, with a marquetry top of various woods, in a radiating sunburst design. Table has one curved front drawer, with a simple brass knob. Legs are a delicate cabriole shape, with gilt ormolu above the knees and capping the feet. Curved stretchers reach to the center where they end in another beautiful piece of marquetry, in a radiating pattern.
History: Marquetry is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The technique may be applied to case furniture or even seat furniture, to decorative small objects with smooth, veneerable surfaces or to freestanding pictorial panels appreciated in their own right.
