Description
2nd-3rd century AD. A biconical gold pendant with organic(?) core, two circumferential ribs and suspension loops above. From an important private London collection; formed in the 1970s and 1980s. Amulet cases such as these originated in Egypt and became popular there during the rule of the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty. They often contained spells written on papyrus and were worn around the neck on a chain or leather thong. Their use spread to other parts of the Mediterranean and eventually they were adopted by the Romans, with examples being found across the Roman Empire. They are worn by boys on the Faiyum mummy portraits and seem to have been worn exclusively by males. 1.04 grams, 30mm (1 1/4").
