Description
3rd century BC. A pair of gold earrings formed from a twisted loop, two circular plaques with delicate filigree decoration to the body and border enclosing three cones, each formed from a single wire. Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. See Venedikov, I and Gerassimov, T. Thracian Art Treasures, London, 1975 Marazov, I. (ed), Ancient Gold: The Wealth of the Thracians, Treasures from the Republic of Bulgaria, New York, 1997, p. 95 for a pendant with similar decoration now in the Kazanluk History Museum, inv. no. MIK A II-1583 Earrings are the most widespread form of jewellery from Thracian areas and the ornamentation tends to be limited to geometrical forms that were worked with unusual precision and purity. Most often the golds threads of the filigree are stretched along the length of the earring, while the gold grains are grouped two or three together to form triangles, lozenges and rosettes. 7.62 grams total, 25-28mm (1").
