A SUPERB REGENCY ROSEWOOD, BRASS MARQUETRY AND GILT METAL MOUNTED SIDE CABINET, IN THE MANNER OF JOHN MCLEAN
Early 19th century, circa 1815
The raised superstructure surmounted by a pair of finials and a pierced gilt metal three-quarter gallery, above two open shelves backed by twin mirror panels and flanked by pierced gilt metal panels, the frieze below incorporating a pair of drawers stamped "J DOOLY & SONS," decorated with brass marquetry and flanked by a pair of female mask mounts, the pair of brass grill paneled doors below flanked by pilasters decorated with brass marquetry depicting foliate branches, on turned, ebonized and parcel gilt feet. The two retailer's stamps to the drawers are also accompanied by a printed paper label to the reverse "Est 1779. JOHN DOOLY & SONS LTD. Fine Art Galleries. 29/30 Dawson Street. DUBLIN 2."

Literature: This cabinet relates closely to a cabinet acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1944 which bears the trade label of John McLean & Son of Tottenham Court Road. (See C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 315, fig. 596.
