Description
We have had a number of fine examples of Japanese Negoro lacquer wares - plates, tobacco-bon and even inro. However, in all of our years of collecting we had never seen a piece of Negoro that has a design in Gold Makie lacquer on the top and inside the lid - until this one. This covered bowl dates from the mid- Meiji period, circa 1880s - and measures 5.1" diameter at its widest and stands 3.3 " with the lid in place. On one side of the top of the lid is a design of one large butterfly executed in both gold makie lacquer and black roiro lacquer - and a small moth type design. Then comes the big surprise - when the lid is turned we find a wonderful large of two large chrysanthemums - one done in both gold and brown lacquer petals - and with a center of the square gold pieces known as petals in hiramakie (flat) style. In the center of the this flower there are a number of round cut cold pieces (gyobo-nashiji). The second flower two tones of gold hiramakie - and in the center is an inset of mother-of-pearl known as aogai-shi. The two together are quite spectacular. The rest of the lid and the bowl itself are done solely in the Negoro lacquer technique.
