Item Details
Description
oleograph, old folds a little faded, some light staining, mounted, Malavi, India, n.d. [c.1900]; and another Islamic poster from the same printing press, both c.340 x 240mm (2) The Ravi Varma Press was frst set up in Ghatkopar, Mumbai in 1894 and later shifted it to Malavli near Lonavala, Maharashtra in 1899. A few years later it was sold to a German employee in 1901, who changed the name of the company to the Malavi Press and later moved it to Bombay where it continued to run until the 1980 s. Raja Ravi Varma was a celebrated Indian painter and artist who was best known for his depictions of Hindu Deities and episodes from the epics. Similarly most of the lithographs produced by the press were of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and were made to be affordable to the public which made him a prominent and influential public figure. His work received profound acceptance from the public and are often found as objects of worship across the length and breadth of India. These prints are particularly scarce as they offer a rare glimpse into the material printed by the press specifically for the Islamic members of the Indian community.
