1840 Penny Black Stamp - 1d. black, plate 2, lettered ME. A single use on small cover addressed to Birmingham, cancelled red maltese cross with Worcestor and Birmingham CDS on reverse. Also a pair of Vintage Tasco MOP Opera Glasses, new and unused, still in the box. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Issued on May 6, 1840, the world's first postage stamp cost one British Penny. The new British postal system became known as the penny post and the new stamp was called the "penny black". The 1840 stamp was gummed but not perforated. It pictures the young Queen Victoria. The portrait was based on a commemorative medal minted during Victoria's first year as Queen at the age of 18. In sleeve 6.75x4. 1 oz. Glasses 5.75x2.75x2. Weight 8 oz
