Watercolor of kayakers on the Housatonic River, originally submitted to The New Yorker magazine and signed by the artist. Single sheet, approximately 9 x 7 inches; matted and framed. At the lower left corner, Getz has written in ink: "Another original New Yorker cover reject. Agnes the Kayak Lady on the Housatonic. July 1990." Arthur Getz (1913-1996) was a prolific cover artist for The New Yorker. From 1938 to 1988 he produced 213 covers for the magazine. Besides his long career as an illustrator, Getz also worked as a fine artist in many mediums and taught at the School for Visual Arts in New York City. [Together with:] Pocket sketchbook by Arthur Getz showing students and models at the School for Visual Arts in New York City, dated April / May 1968. Contains 82 leaves of pen-and-ink sketches from the period. On the final leaf there is the following caption to a drawing: "The psychology of the vignette as opposed to a framed picture."
