SINET, Andre' (French, 1867-1923): Fruit Still Life with Likely Grapes and Currants, oil/canvas, 10 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches (12 3/8 x 15 1/2 x 3/4 inches framed in existing liner), signed lower right "Andre' Sinet" in script. Framed in original or period gilt gesso liner - outer frame absent.

Andre' Sinet (French, 1867-1923): Painter, pastellist, draughtsman & Belle Epoch poster artist. "André Sinet painted several portraits of famous people of the time, including Anatole France and Yvette Guilbert. He also painted scenes from the life of the society woman, and views of Paris and its surroundings." --Benezit Exhibited at Goupil Gallery and appeared in Scribner's Magazine. A smaller floral still life was offered at auction by Bolland & Marotz of Bremen over 10 years ago with an estimate of 1,400 Euro. His painting "Eve" was sold by Sotheby's for over $ 5,000 including buyer's premium fourteen years ago. Also painted noted French art critic Achille Segard. Provenance: Liquidation of semi-retired interior decorator's collection.

In generally quite sound as discovered in an antiques market condition. Not lined. Scattered fine craquelure. The dashes of brown pigments that form the shadows to the lower right of various compositional elements as well as the right half of the vertical stem tend to appear darker under UV light than adjacent pigments and could be touch-ups but we're not certain. The black of the signature contrasts a bit under ultraviolet also - less so than the brown shadows - with the surrounding lighter brown ground and we feel it is period (also after studying images of a couple dozen online it appears to be a 100 percent match). There is paint wear to the bottom edge under the rabbet and there is some slight buckling of the canvas at the extreme upper left corner well away from the entire subject. The work is framed in its original or period gilt liner that is worn and chipped and spotted but generally structurally intact. Outer frame is absent. Nice lightly impastoed highlights.
