The apothecary is typical of the Shanxi Region. It is constructed in the traditional style of recessed- leg style with overhanging cap and the supporting by "leopard legs." The front is divided into rows of drawers. Each drawer has four compartments. The chest seems to have the genuine labels still attached. These may not have been the original ones from the time the cabinet was made. But the names are written in Chinese ink in the style of calligraphy no longer in vogue. Some names are recognizable - ginseng, ginger, chrysanthemums, and dried orange peel. Based on style and condition, a 19 century date is appropriate. The dimensions are 34 inches widex 20 inches deep x 49 inches high.
