United States, Europe, and Mexico, ca. late 19th to mid-20th centuries. This is a large collection -- well over 100 items in a binder -- of photographs and postcards showing vintage erotica -- there are many varieties present, but the vast majority are portraits of individual women in various stages of undress. Some of these are "French postcards", which were sold as postcards but banned from delivery, so often bought by tobacconists or other store keepers and then sold "under the counter" to their patrons. Others in the collection are photographs; there are also a very limited number of drawings. The earliest erotic photographs of the mid-19th century could cost over a week's average salary and were reserved for the rich, but constant improvements to camera design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries enabled photographers to take more candid shots and made pornographic photographs much more available and cheap. This collection offers a fascinating insight into the history of human sexuality. All photos vary in size; the binder is: 2.75" L x 11.25" W x 11.5" H (7 cm x 28.6 cm x 29.2 cm).
