Description
The New York Pennsylvania & Ohio was an Erie predecessor. It was born when the Atlantic & Great Western went under. The tag is an unusual 1880 patent that includes a window for an insert with routing information. This patent was never popular. The tag has a faint James Murdock hallmark on the front and the ornate James Murdock hallmark on the reverse. It measures 1 5/8" by 2 1/4". The Chicago & Atlantic Railway was the Erie gateway to Chicago. This is tag #1878. Early railroads required a different charter (name) for each state they went through. That explains the various names for a single conglomerate like the Erie.
