This lantern has some great features. It is an early brasstop wire bottom. It is marked Pat Appl For on the base assembly. It has an 1883 patent in an arc near the vent holes. It has an F. O. Dewey marking on the bottom of the twist off fount. Wire bottom with glass founts are not common. The glass fount is correct larger diameter and pre-dates the smaller diameter #39 size. These barrel globes have a base diameter of 3 1/2" and #39s have a diameter of 3 1/4".

Back the nuts & bolts – A Dewey frame with B&M RR smartly stamped on the lid in their smaller lettering. The top has a ratchet, spin-down mechanism that predated spring assemblies in the tops. The brass top has a couple of small dimples. The verticals are thick and flat. The horizontals are thick and flat. This is unlike the later 6" tin tops that you can find for the B&M. The twist off fount has an applied bridge wire and not a single stamped side wall. This is an earlier style that required more solder work. The brass base spring clip works fine. The 2 verticals that are the bail ears are odd looking. This frame was built to last. The Pat Appl For stamping on the base is a real plus on this frame.

The globe is a fine standard barrel with B&M RR cast in fancy lettering in a rectangular panel. Never a makers mark on these cast globes. It is flashed red meaning that a thin coating of red is applied to the interior of a clear globe. These flaashed globes often have a molted or muddy look. There are some minor flakes off the flashing on the top rim interior.

Excellent
