Description

A really old Michigan Central Railroad Hat badge made by E. J. Brooks in New York. There has always been some controversy about the use and age of this rectangular badge. Some believe that they are even Maine Central. This collection proves that they are Michigan Central because of the use by the controlling New York Central Railroad. These badges are smaller than average measuring 3 1/4" by 1". They also use the earlier slot mount that required a cloth or elastic band to be wrapped around the hat. The later pin with spreading forks is a better method for keeping the badge on the hat. The lettering on this badge is interesting. The lettering is quite thin. I think that E. J. Brooks was bought out by the American Railway Supply Company in the 1890s. A very nice badge with some real history to it.
