Description
I have never seen anything made by the Taylor Signal Company before. This is the predecessor of the General Railway Signal Company before they moved from Buffalo to Rochester in 1907. This lamp is missing its top. The good news is that the top mounts via 2 pins and the top should have a diameter of 3 1/2". The diameter of the body is a little over 3 3/8". This semaphore lamps has a slide mount, large 2" back lens (missing) and a small 7/8" peek hole on the remaining side. The lens is a 5" clear. There is no burner. The construction is light and no where like the weight of later cast bodies. This relic was found on the New York Central main line in upstate New York between Buffalo and Rochester. An unusual piece.
From my consignor on Jan 21 - I was reading one of my Rochester Engineering Society books and it had a story about General Railway Signal Co. (GRS). It seems that GRs was formed with a merger in 1904 with TAYLOR LAMP CO. of Buffalo. Therefore, I can say with certainty that that TAYLOR lamp is at least vintage 1904 and possibly earlier. Since I found it laying in the weeds back in the 50's just west of the Goodman Street yards in Rochester on the NYC right of way, I can assume that it was "tossed" when semaphore signal lamps were replaced with new GRS signals along the NYC main Chicago line. Just a nice little tidbit to add to the description.
Thanks friend!
