Item Details
Description
Egypt, ca. 5th century CE. This is a beautiful textile section showing a cross design. This particular piece is an example of inset tapestry, in which there is a simple woven ground with colorful decorative panels applied atop it. If you look closely around the edges of the colored portion, you can see that the background has a looser weave. Textiles were produced by Copts and other weavers throughout the Roman Empire; they were preserved by being buried in arid Egyptian graves. This was probably a piece of a tunic, the most common garment worn in Egypt at the time. Size: 16" x 19"Size: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm).

Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL
