Item Details
Description
Europe, Spain or France, ca. 19th century CE. A very fine hand carved, hand painted and gilded wooden Madonna and Child sculpture, standing upon an integrated base. The Virgin wears her traditional deep blue and red robes, the countless folds of her flowing draperies carved so skillfully. A golden crown sits upon her wavy tresses that cascade beyond her shoulders, each curl delineated to present an intricately patterned coiffure. She holds the Christ Child who dons a flowing red robe in her right arm and a golden staff in her left hand. A breathtaking image of the maternal Virgin, a simple yet touching representation made popular in the West through Byzantine art. However, the visages of both Mary and the infant Jesus are more naturalistic than any Byzantine depictions. Gone too, are those pantomime-like gestures. Instead, mother and child gently look toward one another; Mary cradles her baby Jesus, who in turn endearingly grasps his mother's body. In short, their interactions resemble those of any mother and child, but of course, they are not merely any mother and child. Clearly this artist was a master of technique and could breathe life into these ethereal subjects, who are almost too graceful for this world. Size: 6" W x 19" H (15.2 cm x 48.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL

Condition
A few stable cracks to base, one or two that reach the Virgin's lower robes, another just beneath the Christ Child's feet. Normal surface wear with a few nicks to the surface, including one at the lower end of her coiffure (on the back side) and one at the top of her head. Paint and gilding are overall good. Three holes on underside for dowels once used for attachment. Remains of two dowels still there. Overall very good.
