Description
Russia, 18th to 19th century CE. This is a wooden triptych with oil paint done in shades of brown with red highlights depicting a large, sensitive portrait of Jesus flanked by standing saints and with smaller images painted above each section of the triptych. There is Cyrillic writing on each of the panels and a high level of details -- this is one of those pieces where, every time you look, you see something new. The triptych form was extremely popular in Christian art in both the West and East from medieval times onward; this piece is part of that long tradition. Size: 23" W x 17.5" H (58.4 cm x 44.4 cm).
