Description
Europe, probably Bavaria, Germany, ca. 18th century CE. A wonderfully hand carved and polychromed depiction of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Christ stands, dressed in red and blue robes, holding a holy book in his left hand and raising his right hand, his fingers meeting to clasp a shepherd's staff, with a single lamb at his side. The lamb symbolizes how Jesus laid down his life for his flock of sheep - his followers. The lamb also became the attribute of various personifications: innocence, patience, gentleness, and humility. The metaphor of Christ and Christians as shepherd and sheep may be found in the parables in Luke (15:3-7) and John (10:1-18) and to a lesser extent by Psalm 23, Isaiah (40:11) and Ezekiel (34). Its depictions in visual culture originated in Early Christian art when Christ the Good Shepherd scenes were found on catacomb paintings and sarcophagi of the 3rd and 4th centuries and mosaics of the 5th century. This iconography disappeared in the Middle Ages and rarely appeared in later fine artworks. Here, the figure of Christ departs from Early Christian depictions in that he is bearded; however, the rich layers of symbolism persist. Masterfully carved in the round upon an elegant pedestal, the figures display sensitively modeled features with tranquil visages and carefully rendered forms. Jesus' visage, hands, and feet as well as the folds of his drapery are so meticulously delineated. Just look at those steadfast eyes detailed with paste glass inlays, and notice how the fabric cascades over his body. A fine work of religious art symbolizing Christ in his sacrificial role. Size: 8" W x 20.25" H (20.3 cm x 51.4 cm)
