China, Western Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. This is an earthenware painted vessel. Size: 9.5" W x 12.75" H (24.1 cm x 32.4 cm).
he shape of this wonderful piece was influenced by far older bronze wine vessels produced for the elite of ancient Chinese society from the late Shang Dynasty through to the Warring States. The design consists of images of swirling heavenly clouds, painted in vibrant pink, which stand out beautifully against the charcoal hue of the clay.
